Hot off the Press!

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a grassroots, member-led organization whose goal is to build a mass socialist movement. We are the largest socialist organization in the United States. Southern Maine DSA (SMDSA) was incorporated in 2017.

We are one of 250 DSA chapters across the country and the only chapter in Maine. Our chapter primarily organizes in the Portland Metropolitan area, with two geographical branches serving Eastern Maine (Penobscot County) and the Midcoast region (Lincoln, Knox, Sagadahoc, and Waldo Counties). As of December 2019, SMDSA had 371 members.

We believe in democracy from below. Our chapter is led entirely by members. Our Steering Committee is elected by members each year at our General Membership Meeting in January. The role of the Steering Committee is to support the work of members and remove obstacles to organizing.

We hold one General Membership Meeting per month. It is open to the public. The Steering Committee meets at least once a month. Committees and branches set their own meeting schedules. See our calendar for upcoming meetings and events. Members of the press should review our Recording Policy before attending our meetings. Contact us directly for statements/quotes.
